My Story
Originally from a small (and I mean small) farming village in Northern Illinois, my career as a performer began surrounded by cows and cornfields, something I own with pride. In fact, much of my creative works center working-class, rural Midwesterners in an attempt to represent the landscape and the people where I'm from with much more complexity and nuance than they typically receive in most forms of media and entertainment. My writing also explores themes of queer identity, anti-capitalism, American working conditions, and pop-culture. I believe life is meant to be felt deeply, and so, my work spans the full range of human emotions. Life is not just a comedy or a drama, and my works don't fit neatly into one category either. I often turn toward humor as a coping strategy to get through life's difficulties, which instructs my writing where I utilize humor (and sometimes a bit of surrealism and absurdism) as an entry point to explore things like grief, loss, poverty, and illness. I've lived a lot of life in a lot of places. While I'm from a cow-town, I've lived in New Orleans, LA, Portland, OR, St. Louis, MO, Carbondale, IL, and am currently located in Chicago, IL. From the smallest towns to the biggest cities, each and every one of these places shaped the person I am and the art I make. And in sharing my art with others, it is my hope that audiences find ways to connect with the very human experiences displayed within.
